How to Plan a Wedding Dance

Wedding Dance
Wedding Dance
Chances are, if you are planning a wedding, you try to cover all your bases. Wedding dress, reception hall, photographer, cake, vows; everything is arranged down to the smallest detail. One of the aspects is usually left to chance however; the wedding dance. Not just the first dance as husband and wife, but even the dancing done throughout the reception. Taking some time to consider the dancing aspect of the wedding can enhance the enjoyment of the big day, and make wonderful memories (and videos) to be enjoyed for years to come!

The most prevalent custom in Canada is for the bride and the groom to dance the first dance as husband and wife together. Ideally, a slow song with lyrics meaningful to the couple is chosen. In some instances, at one point of the couple's dance the father of the bride will cut in on the groom, while the mother of the groom might then dance with her son. That is up to the couple to decide, and could be a meaningful and special memory of the first dance. Regardless if the couple dances alone or with parents, some basic choreography can go a long way!

It's a good idea to stop by a local dance studio and ask if they are offering wedding dance classes. There is usually the option of individual or group classes. While the group classes are certainly more cost-effective, a one-on-one session with a qualified instructor can give you more personalized attention, especially if your experience with dance is limited. You should also be able to bring your chosen song and work on synchronizing steps in your routine with your music.

If you're short on time, or if perhaps you've already used up your wedding budget, another option is to use an instructional video. Typically, you'd be dancing for about 1 to 3 minutes, and the video can provide some nice turns, pretty poses and some styling tips. This also has the advantage of being able to practice along with the video in the privacy of your own home.

When considering a dance for the wedding reception, it is worthwhile take into account the other dancing typically done during the wedding party. If you don't feel confident with your dancing ability, learning some basic hip-hop, freestyle or jazz moves will allow you to be able to share the dance floor with your guests and being comfortable in the spotlight. Plus, you won't have to duck the videographer!

Weddings are all about having a good time, and nothing gets people into the spirit of the party like dance steps that everyone can perform together, even if they're novice dancers. That's why routines such as the electric-slide and line dances never diminish in popularity. Preparing a special routine to teach your guests ahead of time can really enliven your party and make it a distinct event that stands out from the rest!

Some final tips to keep in mind while planning your wedding dance:
  • Don't wait until the last minute. You will be busy (and stressed) enough as your wedding day approaches. Learning a new skill takes time, so give yourself plenty of it, at least 5 or 6 months.

  • Dancing can actually relieve stress. Speaking of stress, dancing is great at boosting endorphins and making you feel great. Learning to dance with your partner can become a pleasant routine during the week and be something you both look back fondly upon.

  • Think outside the Waltz. Besides the Waltz and other traditional dances, the Tango, Mambo, Salsa, Swing and even the Hustle are all popular at weddings today for a first dance. Make sure you consult with your dance instructor and let her know your chosen music, so that he or she can coordinate the best dancing sequence for you. And remember, the more confident you feel, the more fun you will have!
