Hip-Hop: Randy Jackson’s Best Dance Crew

Randy Jackson

These days, dance has a prominent spot on prime-time TV. From the comfort of our couch, we can observe limber and toned dancers performing unbelievable feats in any style of dance imaginable. Past favourites have included So You Think You Can Dance and Dancing with the Stars. This season however, TV audiences got to experience a new style of a dancing competition with the series premiere of Randy Jackson Presents America’s Best Dance Crew. For the first time in dance reality shows, the competition centered on hip-hop dance crews and not on varied-genre individual performances.

Founder Randy Jackson (American Idol Fame) assured the media that his show is different than the rest. "This is about crews, five to seven people. It's not one person; it's not a couple dancing. This is very different," he told the Associated Press. "Plus, this is a lot younger, a lot hipper, a lot doper. You'll find the latest dance moves, see. You can actually watch this show and learn how to dance."

JabbaWockeeZ crew
America’s Best Dance Crew brought together dance crews from across the U.S. for an old-school hip-hop battle. Hosted by Dancing with the Stars alumnus Mario Lopez, and with a star-studded judging panel consisting of J.C. Chasez (*NSYNC), Shane Sparks (You Got Served, So You Think You Can Dance) and hip-hop superstar Lil Mama. The winners were to receive a cash price, touring contract and battle champion title.

Following a nation-wide search, twelve hopeful crews got to battle it out on the stage. The group quickly got whittled down to just eight who then entered the elimination games. Every week, a new challenge was presented to which the teams rose to meet. The assignments ranged from recreating famous music videos, playing tribute to moves of the past to re-enacting classic movie scenes. There were also plenty of surprises to keep the participants on their toes and at the top of their game!

And, in the now expected reality-competition format, the results were decided by a voting viewing audience. After an astounding 38 million votes, America crowned JabbaWockeeZ, an all-male dance crew as the series’ first champions. JabbaWockeeZ originates from San Diego, California, and was established in 2003 by Joe Larot, Kevin Brewer, and Phil Tayag (3 Muskee).

Given the immense popularity of the first season, the second season is already been announced to air during the summer of 2008 with the live auditions to take place on June 7, 2008.
