The Pilates Method is a physical fitness system developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates. As of 2005 there are 11 million people who practice the discipline regularly and 14,000 instructors in the United States.
Pilates was developed by Joseph Pilates, a boxer and dancer, in the 1920s.
The central principle of Pilates exercise involves building a strong core, the deep abdominal muscles along with the muscles closest to the spine. Pilates exercises develop core control, integrating the trunk, pelvis and shoulder girdle.
