Jazz Class

Jazz is a sharp, energetic, passionate form of dance that draws from many different styles to feed its always-current flavour. From the dynamic, classic style of Broadway - to edgy funk and street jazz - to expressive, emotional lyrical and contemporary, jazz encourages individual expression and the development of your own personal style.

Classes begin with a warm up that includes elements of ballet technique; cardio; isolations of the head, shoulders, feet, ribcage and hips; conditioning; and deep stretching to ensure students will prevent injury and build strength and flexibility that they will use in the rest of class. Then the fun really kicks in as students learn new moves and travel across the floor with jumps, turns and footwork. Modern music with a strong beat is used throughout the class to keep energy high and develop a strong sense of rhythm.

*JAZZ AGE 5-7 This young level of jazz will focus on mastering steps such as skips, marches, hitchie-coos, gallops, ball-changes, runs and preparations for chaine turns.

*JAZZ AGE 7-11 This level of jazz will focus on mastering steps such as kicks, ball-changes, pivot turns, pas de boures, chasses and gallops, tucks, drags, struts, jazz runs and pirouette preparations.

*JAZZ AGE 11-15 This level of jazz will focus on mastering steps such as chaine and pique turns, pirouettes, chasses, jetes and stag jumps, pas de boures, box steps, contractions, kicks and arches.

*JAZZ AGE 16 + [ADULT] BEGINNER This level of jazz will focus on mastering steps such as kicks, chasses and gallops, tucks, pivot turns and preparations for pirouettes and chaine and pique turns, drags, struts, jazz runs, contractions and pas de boures.

*JAZZ AGE 16 + [ADULT] ADVANCED This level of jazz will focus on improving technique, strength and flexibility and pushing yourself to go higher, longer and faster than you thought you could go! Steps will involve progressions that build from simple battements, pas de boures, drags and contractions into multiple pirouettes and traveling-turn combinations. We'll build your jump repertoire with rondeverses, turning jetes, Baryshnikov's, stags, double stags and Russians.

Finally, the moves learned that day are linked into a combination that allows students to use their own musicality and expression to make the steps really "dance"! The combo's song and choreography will continue through several classes to give students a chance to be comfortable with the material; style and feel will change with every new combo to expose students to many tastes. Come dance with us!
